Modular Candle System

Working with a small start-up company we aimed to tackle the issue of candle glass waste. Where a traditional candle would be burned once and the glass would be discarded this solution aims to create a sustainable refill kit that can fit through your letter box. The approach that was decided upon was a stackable disk system that contained the scents with a centre candle containing the wick, this allowed for the added feature where a customer could create there own scent and colour combo by combining different sets.
Technical Challenges
One major technical challenge in this project was accurately casting the wax shape as the faceted design need a high level or accuracy for the parts to satisfyingly align while keeping the luxury aesthetic. To create the shape a 2-part mould was developed, this was printed out of PETG plastic and internally coated with a low friction paint allowing very clean faces.

The wax type was also important to consider as it would affect aspects like , cost, sustainability, mouldability and burn time. Through testing a mixture of 30% beeswax and 70% soy wax was landing on as it allowed for most of the benefits of the harder more expensive beeswax while keeping costs down with the soy wax. This also has the added benefit of the soy wax holding scent much better than a pure beeswax candle.
